How the word “booting up” and “bug” derived?

How did the term “Booting up” come from?

The computer term “booting up” comes from the phrase “Pulling yourself up by your bootstraps.”

Though “booting up” is a phrase slowly falling out of popular use in favor of more practical terms like “turn on your computer,” it’s still one that everyone knows. A variant of the term, “reboot,” (which again the existence of should be no surprise) was even the title of a children’s show several years back.

Why it is taking me 4 years and counting to quit facebook

I like you and you and especially YOU, have considered quitting Facebook. Often. And for a long time. A really, really long time. Yet, here I am. We all realize what an extreme time suck Facebook is. Lured in for a brief check on upcoming event, we realize we are 58 photos deep in the 120 pictures from your ex’s wedding photos. Gads, did you see that dress?

I’m Gonna Quit…Tomorrow

So, yes, I’ve been quitting Facebook for a long time. Here is why, in Year Four, I still haven’t quit Facebook – sound familiar?

FOMO

This is “Fear of Missing Out”. There is also FOMA, the “Fear of Missing Anything.”
  • You never knew before Facebook what was really going on out there. Never realized how fabulous your friend’s lunches were. Never understood how many photos of cute cats there really were out in the world. Never grokked the depth of political passion could be conveyed with a forwarded meme.
  • Well, now you know and knowledge is power. The power to suck you in and never let you go! People want to feel like they fit in, avoid loneliness, and the design of Facebook is to specifically create groups, tribes, clans, cliques. Facebook knows what it is doing. Well, in this area at least. IPOs though, not so much.

Actually Missing Out

Earlier this year I succeeded briefly in quitting Facebook and missed a wedding. Didn’t even know it was scheduled.
  • Nowadays people often send out Facebook invitations and make no other effort at all to inform people of what’s going on. No calls or texts and certainly no paper invitations sent via the postal mail.
  • And it’s not just events that you might miss hearing about, but also other developments in the lives of your friends and family. It seems the way that people introduce us all to their new significant others in now the infamous “Change in Relationship Status”. And on New Year’s Eve, I got dumped via a Facebook relationship status change. Yup. Good thing I checked my Facebook, eh?

Procrastination Nation

No better way to lose a few hours and put off whatever unpleasant task, report, or household chore than to slip on over to Facebook.
  • In fact, you’ll find a plethora of statuses announcing just that intention, or the guilt arises from doing so.
  • Avoiding work by use of Facebook is so common that many employers specifically block access to the site. Of course, they don’t know about your Facebook app on your mobile device, now do that?

Societal Pressure

It’s what brought you to Facebook in the first place, right?
  • Everyone is doing it! Join in, and belong.
  • All your Friends are here.
  • Heck, even your Mom is on Facebook.
  • And her Mom. Yeah.

C’Mon, Stick Around!

It’s too late now. Just give in and do what I do: Wait for Facebook to go belly up eventually so you can leave guilt free. After all, whatever happened to your MySpace page?

Interesting facts related to computer that you would like

Here are some interesting points related to computer that you would love to hear:

1. It took the radio 38 years and the television only 13, but the internet reached 50 million users in only 4 years.
 2. The computer mouse was invented by Doug Engelbart in 1963. It was made out of wood (weird, huh).
 3. In 2009 the average number of Internet transactions per second was 2,000.
 4. Early hard disks in personal computers held only 20 MB of data and cost around $800. In 2010 you could get a 2 GB flash drive for around $8. This implies that there is a 100-fold reduction in the price and a 100-fold increase in storage capacity.

 5. Rear Admiral Grace Hopper, the first female admiral in the US Navy is also known in the computer world for creating the popular programming language COBOL. She also came up with the term ‘debugging’ after removing a moth from a computer.

 6. The computing power in today’s cell phones is much higher than the processing power of all the computers in the Apollo 11 Lunar Lander that put 2 men on the moon.
 7. The two main components in IT (Information Technology) are hardware and software. But there is also a lesser known ‘grey’ component. This is the software that is stored in hardware and cannot be modified easily. It is known as ‘firmware’.
 8. There are over 20 billion web pages on the internet, and that number is rapidly growing every day. Also, there are over 2 billion internet users worldwide at present.
 9. RIM (the BlackBerry operating system company) co-CEO and cofounder Mike Lazaridis dropped out of college to start his own company. He did so after reading Microsoft’s founder, Bill Gates’, book.
 10. The first hard disk drive was created in 1979 by Seagate. Its capacity was a whopping (not) 5 MB.
 11. HP, Google, Microsoft, and Apple have one thing in common – apart from the obvious that they are IT companies. They were all started in garages.
 12. The 12 engineers at IBM that developed the IBM PC had a code name – “The Dirty Dozen”.
 13. The first and still the oldest domain name to be registered is Symbolics.com, it was created on March 15th, 1985.
 14. Most Central Processing Units (CPU’s) are sold as a bit slower than they actually run. By over-clocking them you can get them to run faster – for free.

Security 101-How Can You Protect Your Website from Hacking?

Did you know that over 9,500 websites are blacklisted every single day by the major search engines?  This is because they are infected with malware and thus are no longer qualified to be searched or indexed.  Sadly, most of these webmasters are unaware that their website is compromised by malware and suffer great losses.  While you can request a blacklist removal later on, the damage has been done.  Your best option is to protect your website ahead of time rather than risk such catastrophe.  Let’s consider a few simple points to ward off invasion.

What is Captcha and how it works

What is Captcha?
CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. In simple words it’s the technique to stop web spam. Now what is web spam? Ok, anything that is not relevant to the website but users (or automated bots) try to post comments, links etc are called web spams. Best example is advertisement of Nike shoe in any technical website like Alien Coders which has no relevance for that kind of comment or post. I will discuss about “Web Spam”  in detail in another article.

Why Captcha is required?
CAPTCPA is used to prevent automated software/scripts/spammers (robots) from performing any bad/harmful actions on behalf of actual human being. How a person or website gets harmed if Captcha or such mechanism would not be there, then you will realize why it is required. The goal is to create a test that humans can pass easily but machines can't.

The main goal of CAPTCHA is to test which is simple and straight forward for any human to answer but it is nearly impossible to crack by computers. For example,

  • if you register to any forum board , you will asked to verify Captcha, if it would not be there then imagine the havoc that a web spammers can do by posting porn stuffs in an education site
  • irctc.co.in  implements this too while booking an online ticket, if it would not be there any automated script will book the ticket and tatkal ticket would be a fun for real online users.
  • Gmail, Yahoo etc. mail providers implement too, especially in forgot password case, otherwise you would have got minimum 100 mails of password recovery for your account 😉
 Who uses Captcha?
Of course, it’s used in websites only not in road show…so question should be rather where Captcha is used in websites? The answer is many places. I am listing few of them:
  • Registration form
  • Anonymous comment
  • Forgot password of any websites (after trying wrong password many times )
  • Searching database information from any website like whois details from godaddy.com
  • Contacting site admin or support team

How Captcha works?
I can’t explain the mechanism fully but it can make you sure that being a programmer or a website owner or an internet user you will have a bird’s view on how it works in general.
In simple word, first the CAPTCHA program code generates the random string for text Captcha (combination of alpha-numeric and special characters of some finite length which is predefined by admin of the website) and then user has to fill the box given below the gene CAPTCHA image/text. Now, when use submits the form; the CAPTCHA program validates the text on client side.

If it gets matched with the random generated image or text then the user can proceed for usual work else he/she will not be allowed to proceed further and have to try Captcha procedure again.  Being a valid and genuine user you will surely be able to answer but a robot can’t pass this test (they can if they have the algorithm to crack it, but it’s tough). If it’s an image or audio or some puzzle, it is even tougher for robot to crack.

From howstuffworks.com:
“But not all CAPTCHAs rely on visual patterns. In fact, it's important to have an alternative to a visual CAPTCHA. Otherwise, the Web site administrator runs the risk of disenfranchising any Web user who has a visual impairment. One alternative to a visual test is an audible one. An audio CAPTCHA usually presents the user with a series of spoken letters or numbers. It's not unusual for the program to distort the speaker's voice, and it's also common for the program to include background noise in the recording. This helps thwart voice recognition programs.

Another option is to create a CAPTCHA that asks the reader to interpret a short passage of text. A contextual CAPTCHA quizzes the reader and tests comprehension skills. While computer programs can pick out key words in text passages, they aren't very good at understanding what those words actually mean.”

What are the Different types of Captcha and which Captcha to use?
Based on type of Captcha used we can categorize it as:

  • Text Captcha -> where you need to type few text characters, most easier one
  • Mathematical Captcha -> simple arithmetic or some mathematical function for tougher use
  • Puzzles Captcha -> interesting and tough to crack also
  • Image Captcha  -> you need to identify which image is for what
  • Audio/Video Captcha -> very rare but can be proved tougher one to get cracked by spammers
I have written another post on “which Captcha to use apart from Google’s ReCaptcha

Waiting for the feedback from website users and owners, specially bloggers group 😀

Alternative option for reCaptcha from Google

Alternative option for "reCpatcha from Google"
Catpcha LogoCAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. (Yes, it really should be “CAPTTTCHA.” Don’t blame us; we’re not the ones who made up the term.) It’s a type of challenge test used on web sites to verify that the transaction taking place—the comment being posted, the account being registered, the vote being cast in a poll—is coming from a human and not a computer program. In addition to the examples mentioned above, CAPTCHA are used to block registration spam and contact form spam, to prevent scrapers from stealing email addresses and search bots from accessing private data, to deter dictionary password search attacks, and to preempt servers from getting bogged down by spam and malicious scripts.

Using Captcha may reduce spam but it would also reduce real comments/posts drastically ðŸ™

Something to notice:
CAPTCHA will reduce your spam but it won't eliminate it. People are paid to decipher those glyphs. Some sites use the glyph that was presented to them for their own site so some hapless visitor will decipher it
The biggest problem with spam on sites is if you use software that's in widespread use (eg phpBB). Your best bet for those is to make enough modifications to defeat out-of-the-box scripting. You may get targeted anyway but spamming is a high-volume low-success game. There's no real reason to target your site until it accounts for a significant amount of traffic.

The other thing worth mentioning is techniques that can be used to defeat scripted spam:

  • Use JavaScript to write critical content rather than including it as static HTML. That's a lot harder to deal with (but not impossible);
  • Rename and/or reorder key fields like username and password. For example, generate username and password form fields and store them as session variables so they only work for that user. That then requires the user to have visited the page with the login form (rather than scripting a form response that can be POSTed directly);
  • Obfuscate the form submission. Things like unobtrusive JavaScript that you can do in jQuery and similar frameworks make this pretty easy;
  • Include a CAPTCHA image and field box and then don't display them (display: none in CSS). You'll confuse parsers.

After doing some Google research (search :D) I found Mollom or Akismet a better solution than any others. But I will enlist them all according to my preference:
  1. Mollom

    Mollom logo

  • Supports wordpress, drupal PHP,Python ,Perl
  • Twitter, The economist, Sony Music, Netlog uses Mollom
  • Next generation spam filtering technology … Ham or spam? – When new content is analyzed by Mollom's intelligent text-analysis filter, and Mollom is unsure whether it is ham or spam, it asks the user to answer a CAPTCHA challenge. This challenge-response procedure will never block human users, and it allows us to set very tight spam filters and prevent almost all spam from getting through
  • Eliminate spam moderation queues – By using a combination of advanced content analysis techniques and CAPTCHA challenges, Mollom is able to make sure more spam is captured without preventing legitimate users from posting on your site.
  • Accessible and secure CAPTCHAs – Mollom provides both image and audio CAPTCHA challenges, allowing the visually impaired to participate on your site. We serve our CAPTCHAs from a centralized server and constantly monitor CAPTCHA quality. If hackers solve them, they respond by immediately changing them.
  • Content quality assessment (BETA) – Mollom provides a quality score, based on automated content-analysis techniques, for each post sent to us for analysis. This makes it possible to ignore or reject low-quality or offensive comments, based on quality metrics that you control.
  • Multi-lingual – Mollom stops spam and unwanted content in all languages.
  • Extensive statistics – Mollom plays with an open hand. We show real-time statistics on our front page and maintain an individual statistics page for each site protected by Mollom.
  • Open API – Mollom is built on an open API, meaning that anyone may incorporate Mollom into their web applications. We provide open-source modules for several content-management systems, but you are free to adapt it for your own needs.
  • High-availability built in – The Mollom API uses client-side load balancing, making it reliable and practically infinitely scalable. Should one Mollom server fail or become overloaded, another Mollom server will automatically take over. The Mollom Plus subscription service is guaranteed to be available 99.9% of the time.
  • OpenID – Mollom fully supports OpenID, a decentralized, single sign-on system, which allows users to log in to different websites using only one set of credentials. Internally, Mollom builds a reputation for each of our users' OpenIDs, allowing the inheritance of user reputations across sites in the future.
  • Dedicated Mollom servers – We offer dedicated Mollom servers for enterprise users. These are virtual servers running dedicated, unlimited, full-featured instances of Mollom. You can rest assured that your server will never be hit by a DDoS attack, since it accepts connections only from your web server.
  • Secure authentication – Mollom uses a secure authentication scheme using a keyed-hash message authentication code instead of just a single access key. This protects your key. Hackers cannot hijack your account or impersonate you.
  • Retain spam instead of discarding it – Not all of our users are comfortable with the idea of Mollom discarding spam without the possibility of manual review (no matter how spammy the message appears to be). We've solved this in a simple way: by allowing spam comments to be retained in your site's moderation queue, which can then be reviewed periodically by moderators or administrators. Note that depending on the capabilities of your CMS, this option may not be available in every Mollom client package.
  • Better protection for user registration forms – To help combat user registration spam, some of our Mollom clients now support text analysis on custom, additional fields that may be required for registration, like a "Bio" or "About me" section.
  • Hidden honeypots – In our Drupal Mollom module, we've added a basic honeypot to all forms protected by Mollom, through the use of a hidden field, a common way to trick spam bots into revealing themselves. This significantly reduces the number of spam bots attempting to game your web forms.
 Check it’s pricing scheme. http://mollom.com/pricing

  1. Akismet
Akismet LogoI was using Akismet for my wordpress blogs and found it very effective. It was free few years back but now it has some pricing schemes but it is worthy to use.
Check its planning scheme: https://akismet.com/signup/

To check which plugins and libraries this app supports: http://akismet.com/development/

It has almost all the features that mollom has except
  • Hidden honeypots
  • Content quality assessment
  • Eliminate spam automatically and allow legitimate users to type without facing captcha which I really support

We may go for Image captcha for following reasons:
  • Images are more intuitive than Words
  • Images are harder for machines to crack
  • Clicking/Touching is quicker than typing

  1. Are you a Human (Playthru) -> complete free
are you a human logoAs name suggests, it will check if you are a real human being or spam. Though it will not ensure 100% spam protection which no app does but It’s good, easy and fun to use & implement. Users will like too 😀

Please check the demo, you will smile for sure: http://areyouahuman.com/demo/

It works with HTML5, iPhone, Android, Wordpress, Drupal plugins and PHP, Perl, Ruby, Python, .NET libraries. Here is the link: http://portal.areyouahuman.com/installation

  1. Picatcha (Image Captcha)
Picatcha LogoPicatcha is an image-based CAPTCHA with the goal of making it easy for humans to read but harder for bots to crack. We can try this too.  Pricing scheme seems nominal too. Free, $5 and $10 per month schemes.
Check its comparison with text based captcha here: http://picatcha.com/captcha/
Picatcha related documents: http://picatcha.com/api/

  1. Confident Captcha
Confident Captcha LogoThis is also image based captcha solution implemented as an alternative to text captcha or reCaptcha mainly. There is nothing much to explain in it. Demo itself explains everything.
Confident CAPTCHA™ is a clickable, picture CAPTCHA that stops spam and bots on websites by asking visitors to click on specific pictures.
Pricing schemes not mentioned here. But we can do a free trial experiment on it 😀

Why to use:

  • Stops spam and bots on blogs, web forms, account registrations, ticketing sites and more

Gmail increased file attachment limit-[How to use]

Gmail Increased File upload limitI think majority of us use Gmail for mailing purpose at present followed by Hotmail , Yahoo and so on. In my previous post I had mentioned the Features of different mail providers and Minimal Reasons to choose Gmail for personal mailing system.

There are lots of reasons to choose mail providers, and the attachment size is definitely one of the top reasons to be considered. Recently, Google started to allow file attachment till 10 GB! Of course, there is something that you had to know before using large files as attachment.  I will try to provide an overview on how this large file size email attachment works in Gmail.

  1. First open your Gmail account and click on compose button which is at left top corner (Obviously you know it!).  After that you will see one text with the link written as “try out new compose experience.” Don’t worry, if you can’t see this text with your Gmail Account. They are experimenting now with some accounts, so very soon it will be available for your account too! Here is the screenshot for that.
Try new compose link Gmail

  1. Click on the link provided, then you will be redirected again to compose your mail in new format which allows large size file attachment. First time you will see an introduction screen. Once you click “Got It”, you will be allowed to compose a new mail.
New Compose layout introduction

  1. You will be able to view new compose layout at right bottom corner like this, which have Cc, Bcc just below from and all other options at below like draft mode, text options, attachment options which I will show you in next screenshot
New Compose Layout Gmail

  1. After composing mail properly, here comes the fabulous job to attach High Definition Movie or Software in iso format ( more than 700 MB! ) or for e-books whose sizes are greater than 30 MB as I store many e-books in either Hard Drive or Dropbox and now at Google Drive 😀
When you hover  mouse over “+” icon it will expand and will show you something like this
attach from Drive option in Gmail

Now, this is what Google does to attach larger file sizes, It is actually allowing you to insert files from Google Drive where you can store file of any size which is now upto 10 GB for each file. Before this also I was doing the same. I was uploading files to https://docs.google.com  which is now being redirected as https://drive.google.com

  1. To upload file size bigger than 25 MB and upto 10GB, you need to click on Google drive icon shown at the above image, then you will see something like this. You can upload files directly from your hard disk or using Google drive. It clearly mention you can upload files upto 10GB in size stored in Drive 😀 (But you will have only 5GB space in your drive!)
Final Attachment Google Drive

  1. Once you will upload file(s) successfully, you will have two options before sending, “Share & Send” or “Send without sharing”. Send without sharing means even you mail the attachment to the person; he/she will not be allowed to open. To open that attached file you need to give proper permission to that person. So better click on “Share & Send” option.
Send Option in Gmail

  1. But before clicking on “Share & send” button you need to share it with specific permission which you can do either by clicking “Can View” or “more option” just above the “Share & send” button as shown in the above example.  If you click on “More option”, you will be able to see something like this
More-Options-Sharing-Mail

Now share with caution and then send it to the concerned person.

  1. If you don’t like, new compose layout or for experiment purpose you opted for newer layout then you can opt for older compose style by clicking on down triangle shaped icon then click on “Switch back to old compose” and Done!
More option in new compose Gmail

Question: Google advertises that I can upload file size upto 10GB, then why I have only 5 GB quota?
Answer:  In Google help page, they have mentioned clearly that this upload limit is of course bigger than free quota user, so one needs to purchase additional Google Drive. It also explains that what kind of file type can be uploaded and opened using Gmail attachment. I would suggest you to go through Google Help page before uploading anything or before purchasing any plans.

Here is the Google Drive Purchase plan: https://www.google.com/settings/storage/
Purchase Google drive plan

This link explains how to purchase Google Drive in details.
http://support.google.com/drive/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2375128

Few things to note down:

  • General attachment still allows only upto 25MB
  • For free account holder, one can upload upto 5GB file at max
  • To upload even more than 5Gb at a time you need to consider to upgrade package which I mentioned above
  • I personally didn’t like new compose layout, although it looks good in most cases. What I didn’t like is, It’s hard to figure out to change email id while sending ( as I have 3 accounts associated with it ) or to edit subject
  • I will still prefer old compose layout and will share larger files by uploading files directly to Google Drive instead of using mail layout

[Solved] Problem in viewing Hindi font on websites

In my previous post, I explained the way to read/write hindi or different regional fonts in MS word using several steps.
Here is the quick reference of it.

You may face a situation when you open some website and you see only rounded or square symbols intead of real text. You are not able to figure out, what to do. Then my suggestion is to follow below mentioned steps. It will surely help to get rid of such issues. I am using Windows 7 to test these features.

Steps to View Hindi or different font in website:

  1. If you are seeing square symbol over the page then follow the steps mentioned at our previous post
  2. If you are seeing round symbol, then there is problem with your browser's setting.

You need to find out Encoding sub-menu which remains present in different browser at different location. First location Encoding Menu and then make sure utf-8 encoding is checked.

I will show it using screenshot for three major browsers i.e. IE, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

For Internet Explorer
utf-8 encoding setting in IE

For Mozilla Firefox
utf-8 encoding setting in Firefox

For Google Chrome
utf-8 encoding setting in Google Chrome

Warning: If you see Auto-Select (in IE) or Auto-Detect (in Chrome and Firefox) option, try to uncheck it, if possible.
Please leave your comment if you find it useful and if it helped you someway.

[tips] How to use Google Search efficiently

I am using Google Search engine almost all the time since 2006 and learned lots of things to manipulate Google search in much easier way. I know I am little late to share this and you will have lots of such posts over the internet. But, presentation and thoughts for the same things are always different for different authors.  I would basically show you the real power of Google Search engine and strong evidence to prove that why I love and prefer Google Search Only 😀
More than 80% internet users use Google Search engines followed by Bing then Yahoo etc…
You can download the pdf version of this article from here

Results Taken from statowl.com to show you how Google has captured the search engine market share 😀

market share of search engines

Without wasting your time let’s dive into Google’s real power. I will demonstrate every possible situation with a scenario and how to get benefit of that scenario using Google Search Engine.

Example 1
You need to know what all things you searched using Google Search engine i.e.
History of what you browsed till date. What you will do?

Answer is simple, either type google.com/history or history.google.com;  you will be able to see the search strings that you used to search using Google Search.
Link for Google History:http://history.google.com (make sure you are logged in using Google account)
 Google History

Example 2
What you will do, if you would see a mail in different language? Or somebody sent you few lines in chat that you didn’t understand and seem Latin & Greek to you? Or somebody updated their Facebook status in different language and you wish to respond in the same language?

Once again Google search is there to help you in doing so. Use Google’s inbuilt Language translator. Here is the link for Google translator: http://translate.google.com/

Google Translator

Example 3
Do you want to know Flight timings?

If you type flights, then it will display you all flights leaving from your location. It gets your remote location using IP Address. Ex: flights or flight
Flights search result

If you want to know flight from one location to another type flights from location1 to location2
Ex:  flights form Hyderabad to Kolkata
flights from to search result

Example 4
Do you want to know my best online dictionary?

Yes, it’s Google again. Just type define: word
Ex: define: obfuscated

define search result

Example 5
What if you don’t know the correct spelling or misspelled some words?

Don’t worry now Google is damn smart to rectify it automatically and will display you result for the correct one.  If you didn’t mean what Google shows, still you have option to search for whatever you typed.
misspelled

Example 6
Is it rainy season or sunny at Dhanbad? Do you need to know weather forecast where you live or any place?

1.   Type weather only to show weather information where you live ex: weather
weather search result
2.   Type weather for place-name or weather place-name for that particular place. Ex: weather Redmond or Weather for Dhanbad

weather for place name

Example 7
Do you want to know the time of a place?

1.   Type time only to see your local time ex: time
time search result
2.   Type time in place-name or simply time place-name ex: time in Redmond

time for place search result

Example 8
It’s movie time dude!

Type movie at search box and it will display all movies in all theatres nearby your places. Ex: movie
movies search result

movie movie-name will display that movie list in all theatres Ex: movie taken 2
 movie movie-name

movie movie-name for place-name will display movie in that place in all theatres of that movie. Ex: movie resident evil retribution for Bangalore

movie movie-name place-name

movie for place-name to display all movies in that place in all theatres: movie for City of Brussels

 movie for place-name

Example 9
I want to use Google as a converter either its mass converter or volume or digital storage etc.

Just type subject1 to  subject2

i.e. Celcius to farenhite or
Ton to kg or Byte to bit

Google Converter

Example 10
Did you see my online Calculator?
Actually it’s yours also, in real it’s Google’s 😛 Just type calculator to see what I meant.

Google calculator

Example 11
Do you want an exact search result whatever you have typed?

Then, type phrases in double quotation to do so. Ex: “I am a blogger”

exact phrase search result

Now, before going ahead, we need to know few terms which will be used during Goggle Search. These terms may not seem very useful to common users but it will be very informative and useful for tech savvy and Information Security Community (Bad and Good both).

·         inurl
It will display the pages which will have certain keyword in links i.e. url

Ex: inurl:signup
 inurl search result
·         allinurl
This will display all links/url which will have all given keywords in their urls. It will be useful when you need to search only those websites which will meet given criteria. Like show all links which will have any connection with vim related stuffs under Linux.
ex: allinurl: linux vim
 allinurl search result

·         intitle
It will allow to search the text used in title of any webpage. Ex: intitle:Linux
If you use more than one word then, it will search the first word in title and other words anywhere either in title or contents. Ex:intitle: Linux vim grep and check the result.

If you want to search all the terms in title only, you need to use other option i.e. allintitle 😀
 intitle search result

·         allintitle
It will allow searching all listed words in title of any webpage. Suppose, you wish to see only those web pages which have CCNA, Questions and TCP keywords in their title.  Ex: allintitle:CCNA Questions TCP
Compare the result with above option i.e. intitle
     allintitle
·         intext

It display all results which is being included in intext command and ignores to search for that keyword in links/urls or titles. So use it wisely. If you wish to see in link or title too use other options along with it J like intext:help intitle:perl  inurl:hack

     intext search result

It can be used to gather the basic information required for further process of hacking or penetration testing of any websites. According to my experience, this would be the part of social engineering.
They will not do anything. They will just combine one or more such techniques shown above to get desired result. Like password file, configuration file, database details, server details etc.

Some more tips:

  • Google search is not case-sensitive, so don’t bother about case stuffs
  • Use lesser words to get accurate and more results
  • Use web friendly word like headache instead of my head is paining
  • Punctuation marks never matter for Google search. (bad news for grammar pedantic 😛 )
